Our Orthodontists Answer Your Questions

Why should an orthodontic specialist finish my treatment?

Teeth, and occasionally entire facial structures, are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment, which makes it vital that the treatment is properly completed. Orthodontic specialists have the extensive training that allows them to provide their patients with professional and personalized treatments.

What age should I schedule an orthodontic screening for my child?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child have his or her orthodontic screening at the age of seven. This is typically the earliest time that an orthodontist can effectively evaluate a patient’s orthodontic condition.

Will my teeth eventually straighten out on their own?

Unfortunately, they won’t, which is why orthodontic treatment is so important. The space available for the front teeth won’t increase as you grow older. For most people, after the permanent molars erupt, the space available for the front teeth will actually decrease over time.

Is it too late to have braces if I’m an adult?

You’re never too old to wear braces! In fact, 25 percent of all orthodontic patients are adults and adult orthodontic treatment is very common.

How long will it take to complete treatment?

Overall treatment time will depend entirely on a patient’s specific orthodontic situation and problems. Generally, treatment time will range from 12 to 30 months, with the average being at about 22 months.

How often will I need to come back for appointments?

Appointments will be scheduled depending on a patient’s needs. Typically, this will be about once every five to ten weeks. If there are specific situations that need more frequent monitoring, we’ll then schedule appointments accordingly.

Can I drop my child off for an appointment?

Yes. However, on some occasions, we may need to speak with a parent when they return, so we request that parents check with their patient manager before dropping off their child.

Does wearing braces hurt?

Generally, braces don’t hurt. After certain appointments, your teeth may be sore for a few days, but after most visits, you won’t feel any soreness at all. If you happen to feel any soreness, you can take over-the-counter pain medications, such as Tylenol or Advil, to ease any discomfort.

Can I play sports or musical instruments while wearing braces?

Absolutely! We just recommend that patients wear mouthguards when they play sports. Musicians will likely experience a brief adjustment period while playing their instruments with braces.

Will I need to see my general dentist while wearing braces?

Yes, regular check-ups with your dentist are vital during your orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will determine the appropriate intervals between each cleaning appointment while you’re wearing braces.

How often should I brush my teeth while I have braces?

You should brush your teeth at least four times a day – once after each meal and then again before you go to bed. Your orthodontist will also show you how to floss your teeth while you’re wearing braces.

Are there any foods I can’t eat while I’m wearing braces?

Yes, we’ll provide you with a list of foods to avoid. Sticky foods and hard foods are the types of foods that you’ll want to watch out for as they can cause damage to your braces.
